Making a phone or video call from Business Communicator

You can make phone or video calls directly from Business Communicator on your computer. Or you can dial a contact from Business Communicator and then use your desk phone to talk with a contact.

 

Select any of these ways to make a phone or video call from Business Communicator:

Note: If you're dialing a phone number that requires additional dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) tones, such as a conference bridge, you can type the numbers on your keyboard or open the dial pad in the main window.

Call from a directory

To make a phone or video call using a directory:

Contacts > Options
  1. Do one of the following:

    • To call directly from Business Communicator, select Call.

    • To make a video call, select Video Call.

    • To dial from Business Communicator but use your desk phone to speak with the caller, select Call from Phone.
  1. To disconnect from your call, do one of the following:

    • If you’re calling from Business Communicator, click the red handset icon.

    • If you’re calling from your desk phone, return the handset to the cradle.

    • If you’re on a video call, click the video icon to remove video from the call or the red handset icon to disconnect.

Call from Search and Dial field

To make an phone or video call using the Search and Dial field:

  1. From the main window Contacts or Directory screen, click the Search and Dial field, type a contact’s name or phone number (you can type part of the person’s name or number).

  1. Right-click on the contact.

  1. Do one of the following:

    • To call directly from Business Communicator, select Call.

    • To make a video call, select Video.

    • To dial from Business Communicator but use your desk phone to speak with the caller, select Call from Phone.
  1. To disconnect from your call, do one of the following:

    • If you’re calling from Business Communicator, click the red handset icon.

    • If you’re calling from your desk phone, return the handset to the cradle.

    • If you’re on a video call, click the video icon to remove video from the call or the red handset icon to disconnect.

Call using the dialpad

To make an phone or video call using the Business Communicator dialpad:

  1. From the main window’s menu on the left, click Dialpad (the dialpad icon).

  1. In the Start new call field, type a phone number. (Use Business Communicator’s dialpad or type the number on your computer). You can also copy and paste a phone number into the Start new call field.

  1. Place the call by doing one of the following:

    • To make a phone call directly from Business Communicator using your headset or computer’s microphone/speakers, click the handset icon.

    • To make a phone call using your desk phone, click the phone icon.

      Your desk phone rings and the call is placed from your desk phone.

    • To make a video call directly from Business Communicator using a headset or your computer’s microphone/speakers, click the video icon.
  1. To disconnect from your call, do one of the following:

    • If you’re calling from Business Communicator, click the red handset icon.

    • If you’re calling from your desk phone, return the handset to the cradle.

    • If you’re on a video call, click the video icon to remove video from the call or the red handset icon to disconnect.

Call from call history

To make a phone or video call using your call history:

  1. From the main window’s menu on the left, click Call History (the handset with a clock icon).

  1. Place the call by doing one of the following:

    • Double-click on the call record.

      If you double-click to call a contact in the call history log, Business Communicator calls the person using the same method you used previously. For example, if you spoke to the contact using video, Business Communicator will video call the person.

    • To make a phone call directly from Business Communicator using your headset or computer’s microphone/speakers, right-click on the contact, then from the list, select Call.

    • To make a phone call using your desk phone, right-click on the contact, then from the list, select Call from Phone .

      Your desk phone rings and the call is place from your desk phone.

    • To make a video call directly from Business Communicator using a headset or your computer’s microphone/speakers, right-click on the contact, then from the list, select the Video Call.
  1. To disconnect from your call, do one of the following:

    • If you’re calling from Business Communicator, click the red handset icon.

    • If you’re calling from your desk phone, return the handset to the cradle.

    • If you’re on a video call, click the video icon to remove video from the call or the red handset icon to disconnect.
