What is dedicated internet access (DIA)?

Dedicated internet access is a service that provides a private, high-speed and secure connection to the internet. Unlike the shared-access broadband widely available from Internet Service Providers (ISPs), DIA delivers some of the highest speeds and bandwidths, with the assurance of reliability, privacy and security. With DIA, internet traffic to and from your business does not have to share the road with millions of other users. This direct connection between your company and the network service provider is monitored in real time to block security threats.

How does dedicated internet access work?

Specialized network service providers and some ISPs deliver dedicated internet access solutions. Also called a leased line, DIA relies on a variety of connection technologies, which are usually determined by the needs of the enterprise.

The service provider will furnish specialized routers to serve as a gateway for each local area network (LAN) requiring a DIA connection. Each gateway is connected to the service provider network with a network access loop that provides an exclusive physical path, or circuit, between the user and the provider.

A dedicated port at the network service provider is used to connect to the loop. The service provider controls the connection speed and bandwidth by configuring this port in accordance with the service level agreement (SLA) in place. From there, the network service provider connects to its internet backbone and dedicated Internet Protocol (IP) addresses are assigned.

Benefits of dedicated internet access

Dedicated internet access provides numerous advantages for medium and large enterprises that require a strong and persistent connection to the internet. Bandwidth pressure is a constant concern, and the growth of cloud computing, video content and a distributed workforce have only increased the demands on the internet. Businesses have many reasons to choose dedicated internet access:

Dedicated internet access vs. broadband

Internet service providers provide most consumer internet access using broadband technologies. Broadband systems are shared networks, often offered as a public utility to thousands or millions of customers receiving the service. Dedicated internet access differs from broadband service in that it is an internet connection intended for the exclusive use of a single customer.

In practice, broadband speeds are highly variable, with asymmetric upload and download speeds changing with external network factors. DIA has data transfer rates that maintain a minimum speed for both uploads and downloads. Broadband is far more vulnerable to cyberattacks than DIA, which provides continuous monitoring in an extra layer of threat detection. Among the most sensitive industries requiring the fast, stable and secure connections of dedicated internet access are retail, financial, healthcare and manufacturing.
