Viewing real‑time caching metrics

You can view a near real-time caching metrics for the edge caching nodes. Snapshots of the data are gathered every minute and displayed as part of the totals in a region table and two charts below the table.

 

The table and charts are updated every 20 seconds (if new data is available) and is collected while you're on the page in Media portal. Six hours of historical data is made available when each data type is selected. Media portal doesn't store the real-time data, but you can adjust the time window and filter options without losing data for up to one hour.

To view a real-time caching metrics:

  1. From the main menu, select Network Tools > Caching Real Time Monitor.

  1. If you have more than one access group, select the access group you want to work with.

    Media portal shows the properties or regions for the access group you selected and data (such as requests per second, megabits per second, etc.) for each of the properties. Below the table, Media portal charts the requests per second and megabits per second for the previous hour (in your local time) for the whole access group.
  1. Do any of the following:

    • To view the table and charts by region or by property for the access group, select the By Region or By Property tab.

    • To change the data columns shown in the table, click Data Columns, click the checkbox next to the data you want to view, then click Data Columns again. (Media portal updates the table based the data you selected.) You can view the following metrics:

      • Reqs/sec—number of requests per second served to end-users (clients).
      • Mb/sec—number of MB of traffic served to end-users (clients) per second.
      • Miss Mb/sec—amount of traffic (in Mbps) that were filled from the origin (your origin server or Lumen Origin Storage).
      • Miss/sec—number of cache fill requests per second; includes peer-to-peer traffic within the CDN.
      • 404/sec—number of 404 (File Not Found) HTTP responses generated per second. This number measures URLs requested by clients that do not exist at the origin. This is missing content at the origin, not an operational issue with the CDN.
      • 503/sec—number of 503 (Service Unavailable) HTTP responses generated per second. This number is indicative of an unresponsive origin server when the CDN attempted to contact it. This metric can indicate a failed or misconfigured origin server.
      • 504/sec—number of 504 (Gateway Timeout) HTTP responses generated per second. This number is indicative of a failure to connect to the origin when attempted. This metric can indicate a failed or misconfigured origin server, or of connectivity issues between a CDN node and the origin. High 504 rate from a single CDN node can indicate connectivity issues (routing or other problems within the Internet that are affecting subsets of the network). High 504 rate from most or all of the CDN nodes tend to indicate issues at the origin environment.
      • 5xx/sec—number of any 500 series HTTP status codes generated per second. This number includes 503 and 504 errors.
      • PT/sec—number of premature terminations per second.
      • Hit Rate %—percentage of the number of requests that did not need to wait for the origin server compared to the total number of requests seen.
      • Auth %—percentage of successful proxy-based authentication requests compared to the total number of authentication requests made. Indicates overall ratio of approved (200 responses) to unapproved (401 or 302 responses) proxy authentication requests from the CDN to the designated authentication service.
      • Signed %—percentage of successful token-based authentication requests made, compared to the total number of requests received for resources using token authentication.

    • To change the threshold flag, type a percentage in the field next to the Show Threshold checkbox. To turn the threshold flagging off, clear the checkbox. (When the metrics go above the value in the field, the cell turns green. When metrics fall below the value, the cell turns red.)
    • To add a region or property to the graphs below the table, click the checkbox in the column with the graph icon. (Media portal adds a color to the checkbox indicating the color used on the graphs for the region/property.)

    • To change the data shown on the chart, select the metric you want to graph from the list on the left, then select a time period for the data (30 minutes, 1 hour, or All Data) from the list on the right.

    • To view the data in the charts in GMT, clear the Local Time checkbox. To change back to local time, select the Local Time checkbox.

Note: In certain situations, the values shown may appear to be inflated. This report shows the activity within the access group, which can include streaming data. You can fix this issue by creating and configuring a child access group that includes only Caching properties or by requesting that CDN Support enable the new child access group for Caching RTM.
